If President Trump is as furious with Attorney General Jeff Sessions as he would have us believe, then why hasn’t he replaced the AG? Or why hasn’t Sessions stepped down? It’s a puzzlement, as the king famously sang in The King and I.
And it puzzle me to learn
That tho’ a man may be in doubt of what he know
Very quickly he will fight
He’ll fight to prove that what he does not know is soOh, sometimes I think that people going mad
Ah, sometimes I think that people not so bad
But not matter what I think, I must go on living life
As leader of my kingdom, I must go forth
Be father to my children and husband to each wife
Etcetera, etcetera and so forth
I don’t know the answer, but it sure baffles me. I know lots of people in and around the Justice Department, and I keep asking them what I’m missing. Some of them have an intriguing answer, which crops up from time to time in blogs. The answer: the Trump-Sessions falderal is a deception, distracting us from what is really going on.
I think this is a fantasy, but it’s great fun, and it bespeaks the nutsyness that characterizes contemporary politics, here and throughout the Western democracies. And it also shows our contempt for the journalists who have filed so many false stories and ignored so many real, important ones (can you spell “Hillary?”) that we are willing to accept a fantasy for which no evidence exists—at least to my knowledge.
So here’s the fable, which I’ve had whispered to me by some pretty well-placed officials and friends of theirs. Sessions is still at his post because he is secretly pursuing the bad guys — yes, the Democratic colluders with Putin and Xi and maybe even Khamenei. It’s all outside Washington, it’s being managed by Huber out in Utah and in small flyover towns around the country. We here in lefty media world don’t hear about it, because it’s squirreled away.
There are some nominally serious people of my acquaintance who believe that there are grand juries preparing indictments, and that when Justice IG Horowitz is ready, the evidence from the grand juries will see the light of day. When? Who knows? But then again, does anyone know what Huber is up to? Horowitz has demonstrated a rare ability to keep his findings secret. Have you read a single article about his activities? But the Trump-Sessions insults dominate the daily feed.
I warned you I think it’s a fantasy. Yet, so much of what we know today about the corruption of CIA, FBI and Justice would have seemed fanciful a short time ago. And there’s no denying that Trump delights in misdirection, is there? And don’t you think it’s easier to keep a secret in Utah than it is in D.C.?
If I were a reporter today, I’d be hunting for grand juries, and I’d go for total immersion in the Huber story. Yes, grand juries are supposed to be secret, but Woodward and Bernstein got their hands on grand jury information during Watergate. Is there any reporter with the curiosity to either confirm or put paid to this fantasy? I think that President Trump has shown bad judgment by refusing to declassify the Russiagate documents, as he showed bad judgment in firing the splendid General Michael T. Flynn. I still don’t see any reason to believe Trump will rethink those decisions.
The fantasy needs to be explored. Faster, please.
